Foster Diversity, Fairness & Truth and Reconciliation

In Action:

  • Develop and enhance employees' knowledge and understanding to support VIU's Indigenous Commitment and Truth and Reconciliation
  • Create additional Indigenous student employment opportunities
  • Implement focused efforts to prioritize hires from under-represented groups
  • Engage directly with the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Project Steering Committee to identify and respond to barriers to individuals in underrepresented groups
  • Encourage the use of inclusive language, particularly the use of the term "employees" where possible
  • Ensure transparency in VIU's hiring process
  • Use existing communication channels to enhance transparency and accountability Implement truth and reconciliation within human resources strategies and efforts
  • Develop a comprehensive, evidence-based, and sustainable equity, diversity and inclusivity program to influence changes through training and education

  • EDI Action Plan launched (2021)
  • Dept. of Indigenous Education & Engagement offering Pro-D sessions for all employees & orientation presentations at all new employee orientation offerings.
  • Employment opportunities for Indigenous applicants for specific positions with bona fide requirements
  • Self-identification questionnaire for all job applicants and VIU employees implemented (2021 and 2022)
