Research Finance

Research Finance provides financial administrative support to the researchers and project personnel, with a focus on compliance, financial reporting, billing & collections and training.

Our department supports researchers to ensure all sponsored research and specific purpose funds comply with sponsor guidelines, university policies and accounting principles.

How we can help

  • Serve as a valuable resource for the research community by interpreting and communicating sponsor guidelines, as well as VIU policies and procedures, for all sponsored research and specific purpose funds.
  • Develop guidelines and processes that promote effective stewardship of sponsored research and specific purpose funds, helping to foster strong relationships with sponsors.
  • Collaborate with Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Office (SRCA) to act as a liaison between VIU researchers and sponsors, providing timely support to the research community.
  • Offer seamless support in preparing and submitting required financial reports to sponsors.
  • Provide training opportunities to equip the researchers with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective management of all sponsored research and specific purpose funds.

Policies, guidelines and procedures

Tri-Agency Grants (NSERC / SSHRC / CIHR)

Policies relating to Tri-Agency grants administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Tri-Agency is the umbrella term used to describe the three Canadian Government research funding agencies:

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

The Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration (TAGFA) is a principles-based guide that will foster a balance between control and flexibility. It will also take into consideration existing administering institutions’ policies, processes and internal controls.

Training

We offer periodic training events to provide help and guidance for researchers and staff in managing research funds. These will cover subject matter that run from general research funds administration to sponsor-specific policies and guidelines, including issues identified from our regular internal financial monitoring and external-initiated audits.
