Senate and Senate Standing Committee Elections 2024

Senate

Nominations are now being accepted for a three-year term in the following position:

• Trades and Applied Technology Faculty Representative

For the position noted above:

Term of Office: July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027
Nomination Period: February 23 to May 6, 2024
Campaign Period: May 7 to June 3, 2024
Voting Period: June 4,5, and 6, 2024

Nominations must be submitted via email as per the nomination procedure, by 3:00 pm on May 6, 2024 to elections@viu.ca.

Senate meets once per month on a Thursday, normally at 4 pm. For more information, please visit
the VIU Senate site.

Curriculum Committee

Nominations are now being accepted for three-year terms in the following positions:

  • Science and Technology Faculty Representative
  • Trades and Applied Technology Faculty Representative

For the positions noted above:

Educational Standards Committee

Three Faculty Representative positions are reaching end of term on June 30, 2024.

Nominations are now being accepted for three-year terms in the following positions:

• Arts and Humanities Faculty Representative
• Social Sciences Faculty Representative
• Trades and Applied Technology Faculty Representative

Indigenous Commitments Committee

Nominations are now being accepted for a three-year term in the following position:

  • Support Staff Representative - nominee and nominators must be self-declared as indigenous persons

For the position noted above:

Term of Office: July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027
Nomination Period: February 23 to May 6, 2024
Campaign Period: May 7 to June 3, 2024
Voting Period: June 4,5, and 6, 2024

Eligibility

  • Support staff holding a regular (not temporary) appointment are eligible to be elected only to the support staff position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Faculty members within BCGEU or VIUFA holding a regular (not temporary) appointment are eligible to be elected only to the faculty position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Vancouver Island University (VIU) students who hold temporary or part-time, regularized, faculty or staff positions at VIU are not eligible to be elected to the faculty or staff positions on Senate or Standing Committees.

Per the University Act:

"Faculty member" means a person employed by a university as an instructor, lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, professor, or in an equivalent position designated by the Senate.

"Support staff" means employees of the special purpose, teaching university who are not (a) officers of the special purpose, teaching university, or (b) deans or faculty members.

  • Support staff members holding a regular appointment at the time of the election are eligible to vote for the support staff member position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Faculty members holding a regular appointment at the time of the election are eligible to vote for the faculty positions on Senate or Standing Committees.
