Term of Office: Upon election to June 30, 2023

Nomination Period: January 6 to 24, 2022

Campaign Period: January 25 to February 21, 2022

Voting Period: February 22, 23 and 24, 2022

Indigenous Commitments Committee

Support Staff Representative (by-election) - second call for nominations

Term of office: Upon election to June 30, 2022

Nomination Period: December 20, 2021 to January 24, 2022

Campaign Period: January 25 to 31, 2022

Voting Period: February 1, 2 and 3, 2022

Note regarding eligibility: This support staff position is to be elected, “from and by VIU indigenous people in support staff positions."  VIU employee records do not currently identify those of us who identify as indigenous people.  We are exploring options to address this information gap, but for this current election we are relying on the community to self-patrol this qualification. Only those who identify as an indigenous person (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit) should consider running for this position, nominating someone for this position, or voting in the election.

Eligibility

  • Support staff holding a regular appointment are eligible to be elected only to the support staff position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Faculty members holding a regular appointment (either representative group) are eligible to be elected only to the faculty position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Vancouver Island University (VIU) students who hold temporary or part-time, regularized, faculty or staff positions at VIU are not eligible to be elected to the faculty or staff positions on Senate or Standing Committees.

Per the University Act:

"Faculty member" means a person employed by a university as an instructor, lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, professor, or in an equivalent position designated by the senate.

"Support staff" means employees of the special purpose, teaching university who are not (a) officers of the special purpose, teaching university, or (b) deans or faculty members.

  • Support staff members holding a regular appointment at the time of the election are eligible to vote for the support staff member position on Senate or Standing Committees.
  • Faculty members holding a regular appointment at the time of the election are eligible to vote for the faculty positions on Senate or Standing Committees.
